Natural Mouth Cleansers
Several herbs freshen and cleanse the mouth and teeth very effectively.
Fresh sage leaves rubbed over gums or chewed are very refreshing and cleanse the breath too.
Mint Breath Fresheners
5 ml (1 tsp) finely crushed cloves little egg white
Mix mint and cloves with a little egg white. Roll into tiny balls. Store until dry. Chew a mint freshener every now and then.
Lavender Breath Freshener
12,5 ml (1 tbsp) lavender flowers 25 ml (2 tbsp) icing sugar
1 egg white, whisked
Mix ingredients well, make into little balls, and leave to dry until firm. Chew when needed.
Chapped Lip Salve
Cold weather, wind-burn or sunburn often leave lips very sore and rough. You can make a quick dressing by mixing 2 or 3 drops of oil of sage with 5 ml (1 tbsp) honey and applying it frequently with your fingertip. Alternatively, make your own salve:
12,5 ml (1 tbsp) sweet almond oil or medicinal olive oil 12,5 ml (1 tbsp) wheatgerm oil
3 drops oil of rosemary or lavender
Melt all ingredients in the top of a double boiler, stirring thoroughly. Cool, pour into a jar and keep covered. Smear a little every now and then onto sore lips.
Spicy Mouthwash
12,5 ml (1 tbsp) crushed cinnamon
12,5 ml (1 tbsp) caraway seeds
12,5 ml (1 tbsp) crushed allspice berries
500 ml (2 cups) sherry
Grind all the ingredients together and add to the sherry. Bottle and stand for 4 days, shaking up daily. This is a concentrated mouthwash and very cleansing, but it needs to be diluted. Use a few drops in a glass of water.
