Scienticfic Skin Care (Forehead, Eyes and Ears)
THE FOREHEAD
Greasy red `seborrhoeic eczema’ of the scalp often spreads beyond the hair margin onto the forehead but is easily identified by the company it keeps and once the tell-tale problems in the scalp, at the centre of the face, perhaps in the front of the chest, are identified, the disorder can be properly treated.
Blackheads, whiteheads and spots are common on the forehead and many girls try to hide them by growing a fringe. Some people think that the fringe makes the spots worse but this is certainly not proven. It could be that the spots come first and then the fringe is used as a disguise rather than the other way round.
There used to be a problem with very greasy hair and cheap brilliantines but now fashion has changed, this is uncommon.
Patchy discolouration of the skin as a consequence of pregnancy and the contraceptive pill may pick out the forehead. A dermatologist may be able to help with special fading creams containing hydroquinone or you could buy the commerical product Fade Away. A dermatologist may be able to combine hydroquinone with other pigment-reducing substances such as retinoic acid and a dilute steroid, and make a more effective colour reducer.
THE EYES
The skin around the eyes is less well supported and becomes swollen much more readily, a fact easily attested to by anyone who has been punched in the face. Regular puffiness of the eyes together with irritation and redness is a important clue to contact allergy. Proper investigation, often with patch testing, will be needed to sort out just what might be causing the swelling. There is no need to buy cosmetics that are advertised as being specially formulated for the skin around the eyes. There is no scientific basis to support the contention that this area is particularly ’sensitive’ and any moisturiser or soap can be used on this skin as well as anywhere else. You may find that modern eye make-up, which is highly efficient and designed to stick on the skin through thick or thin, is more difficult to remove and will need a lot of rubbing and soap before it comes off Inevitably some of the soap gets into the eyes and makes them sting so it is more sensible to use a specially formulated eye make-up remover to assist in this task.
THE EARS
Itchy scalps often go with itchy ears and you may have scaly redness going down towards the eardrum. People end up applying a multitude of drops and treatments to relieve the itch and can become allergic to something they hoped would help them—so don’t! See your doctor first.
Pierced ears can easily become infected and an antibiotic may be needed if redness and soreness develops, or if there is an unpleasant smelly discharge from the wound. Make sure whoever pierces your ears knows what they are about. A lumpy overgrowth of scar tissue may be an unwelcome result particularly in negro girls. You may need to have injections of a steroid solution to try and break up the extra amount of collagen that has been produced.
Allergy to metal reveals itself by irritation and a rash whenever cheap costume jewellery is substituted for pure gold.
The tops of the ears become scaly and red with old age especially if you have fair skin and blue eyes and have spent many years under the sun. This is the result of damage from solar irradiation. The skin cells are disorganised and there is a slight risk of skin cancer so it is best if all such persistent patches are removed by a dermatologist. Wear a wide- brimmed hat in the sun or grow your hair over the ears and use extra sun-screens if you have sensitive skin.
