Bring Change to Your Life-Styles
Changing life-styles, more than any other factor, is considered to be the best way to prevent early death in our society.
When people in western society die before the age of 65, it is considered to be early or premature death. The four major factors contributing to early death are noted in figure 19.1. Human biology, which includes hereditary predispositions to disease, accounts for only a small share of the causes of early death. Improvements in the environment and in the health-care system could substantially decrease early death, but by far the best way to decrease this problem is the promotion of healthy life-styles.
Healthy life-styles learned early in life are most likely to be maintained throughout life.
Research suggests that behaviors that are learned at a very young age and that become habit are more likely to be maintained throughout life. For this reason, education concerning healthy life-styles should be started in the formative years. Simple health behaviors such as brushing the teeth, when begun early in life, are often maintained throughout life.
It is never too late to adopt positive life-styles to promote optimal health.
The negative impact of unhealthy living may have effects that are irreversible. Severe malnutrition, for example, could result in stunted growth and other problems that are permanent. Nevertheless, many problems associated with unhealthy life-styles can be improved or eliminated by changing personal living habits. Recent research indicates that stopping smoking, even among people who have smoked for years, reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer. Proper exercise and techniques for stress reduction can help reduce back pain and improve the quality of life for people with back problems, even those who have had chronic problems.
