Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is one of the most widely used alternative therapies and has been around for over 4000 years. It has Roman, Greek and Chinese history. In aromatherapy, pure plant extracts called essential oils are used, which can be absorbed into the body by the skin or inhaled through the nose (olfactory system). There are well over 400 essential oils, each with their individual aroma and therapeutic virtues. These are blended into a carrier oil for massage on the skin and can be used in a vaporiser, bath, spritzer bottle or as an inhalation.
Unfortunately there are a lot of cheap adulterated oils on the market, making it difficult for the layperson to know which oils are pure and of therapeutic value. While any oil is okay to use if you really enjoy the smell, it is essential you check the source, botanical name, price and company before using them therapeutically.
In our book Like Chocolate for Women we describe in detail how aromatherapy can be used to recharge your batteries and treat specific emotional and physical conditions. Aromatherapy can help treat stress-related problems like digestive complaints, fatigue, mild depression, insomnia, headaches, fluid retention and anxiety. It can also help with symptoms of colds, flu, back pain, menstrual and menopausal complaints, muscular strains and cramps. There are cautions for people who are pregnant, have high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy and heart conditions.
(When the aromatherapist makes your blend to be used in the treatment make sure you absolutely enjoy the aroma. Don’t be afraid to say if you do not like it.
Smell is closely linked to your emotions and your therapist will be pleased to know the blend created made you feel good.)
