Traditional Chinese system of Healing
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese system of healing. The practitioner inserts long thin needles into selected points on nerve or energy pathways called meridians. The key principle is that chi (energy) travels along these meridians and when they become blocked, pain or illness results. The needles are also manipulated by rotation, electric current or heat to stimulate points that increase or reduce energy flow, clear blocked pathways, tone and restore balance to the whole system.
We highly recommend you see a fully qualified acupuncture professional who specialises in this treatment. Many doctors and physiotherapists also use it as part of their treatment plans, but they may not be as well qualified.
(Do not be squeamish about the idea of having needles stuck into you. Acupuncture needles are very fine and when skilfully inserted will greatly contribute to your health. Take a tissue with two drops of Neroli or Bergamot to help disperse anxiety and inhale three times before treatment begins. The more you relax, the more effective the treatment is.)
Advocates claim that virtually any complaint can be treated with acupuncture, although there is a caution with cancer. It is used to boost the immune system, often at the change of season, and as treatment for muscular pain, headaches, menstrual and gastro-intestinal problems, asthma and eczema. It has even become an alternative to anaesthesia for some operations.
